Grants enable museums to provide the best possible experience for visitors.

Grants available for a wide range of collectors not only aid historical preservation but also help instill a sense of pride of heritage and craftsmanship. Grants are available for various categories of collections. They include museum collections, golf equipment collections, collections of tractors and farming implements and vehicle and classic boat collections. Diverse as they are, these collections have a common denominator, namely a collector's passion.

  1. Grants for Museum Advancement

    • Museumwise (museumwise.org) administers a number of grants sponsored by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). These grants help museums and historical societies develop and benefit their institutions. The grants offer access to professional assistance in the development process. "Get Ready!" grants provide opportunities to learn about strategic planning with the help of an experienced consultant. "Get Set!" grants offer access to professional expertise applicable to any area of museum operations. These areas include exhibition development, conservation, educational programs and fundraising. As of 2011, the grant value was up to $3,000 for consultants' fees and travel expenses. "Go!" grants pay for museum staff and volunteers to travel to other museums and to attend conferences and workshops. As of 2011, these grants had a value of up to $750 a year. Grant funds are available at the start of each calendar year. Museumwise accepts applications on a first-come, first-served basis.

Golf Collectors' Society Young Collector Grant Program

    • The Golf Collectors' Society (GCS) is an international, nonprofit organization of members who share a common love of golf. The society offers a Young Collector Grant Program. Candidates for the young collector membership must be between 15 and 25. Candidates must write an essay expressing interest in golf collecting and history. As of 2011, the grant provides a one-year GCS membership with the possibility to reapply for a second year. Sponsorship by a current GCS member is a grant requirement. The GCS Young Collectors Grant Fund accepts donations through fundraising and direct contributions from members.

    Minneapolis-Moline Collectors Grants

    • Established in Iowa in 1987, Minneapolis-Moline Collectors Inc. (MMCI) promotes the preservation and history of that tractor manufacturer's products through the MMCI Preservation Grant and the Oral Histories Grant. The Preservation Grant documents Minneapolis-Moline and predecessor companies and their products so that historical information remains available for future generations. Examples of grant projects include the restoration of tractors and farming implements. As of 2011, the value of the MMCI Preservation Grant was up to $1,000. The Oral Histories Grant provides for the compilation of oral and video interviews with people who have relevant historical information to relate. As of 2011, the value of the Oral Histories Grant was $250 per interview. Grant applicants must be sponsored by an active, non-related MMCI member. Applications must include the project purpose, timeframe and estimated budget.

    Collectors Foundation Grants

    • Hagerty Insurance Agency established the nonprofit Collectors Foundation in 2005 to pass on to the next generation as much enthusiasm, passion and information as possible about collector vehicles and classic boats. The foundation sponsors scholarships at educational institutions that have programs or majors in restoration technology, rod and custom building, wooden boat building and transportation design. The foundation also works with vocational high schools and at-risk youth development programs in cooperation with museums, clubs and other organizations. In their project proposals, applicants must demonstrate a long-term view to assist the hobby, the potential to create positive change, innovation, design that elicits public interest and appreciation of historical vehicles and classic boats, and sustainability beyond the grant length.
