Handmade Cupcake Box
No matter how much time you spend baking and decorating cupcakes, you are wasting time if you do not have a cupcake box. Commercially manufactured boxes use heavy-duty plastic and have individual cups that keep your cupcakes from sliding around inside the box. Handmade cupcake boxes provide the same benefits as store-bought boxes, but you only need a few things from around your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Protecting the Cupcakes
-
When making a cupcake box, you need padding inside that protects the cupcakes. Try using tissue paper or shredded newspaper. Run the paper through a paper shredder or slice into long strips by hand. The thin shape of the paper hides the fact that it is just old newspaper and gives it a more decorative touch. Arrange the cupcakes in the box and push the paper around the sides and edges of the cupcakes. Work with one cupcake at a time, ensuring that each one is secure before adding another cupcake.
Making the Boxes
-
Use heavy-duty cardstock, which is thicker than traditional sheets of paper. Simply Modern Mom offers a free pattern or template that shows you where and how to cut the cardstock into the box shape. You need one large piece of cardstock. Fold the top down two inches and fold the top up two inches. Make a fold on either side of the box by two inches. Fold the corners of the cardstock in and use a dab of glue on each corner that keeps the box shape. Cover the top with a piece of plastic wrap. Use different colors or patterns of cardstock for each box.

Considerations
-
Any type of cardboard or paper box works as a cupcake box. Make sure that the box is tall enough that it completely covers the sides of the cupcakes and is taller than any frosting or decorations used on the cakes. Shoeboxes, gift boxes, packing boxes and even shipping boxes work for cupcakes. If the boxes are significantly taller than the cupcakes, try cutting down the sides slightly with a utility knife.
Decorating the Boxes
-
Decorating the outside of your box turns the ordinary cardboard box into a decorative gift for family and friends. Wrap a piece of ribbon around the box and tie in a large bow in the center of the box. Add a cupcake shaped charm or a set of measuring spoons onto the end of the bow, mimicking what the recipient finds inside.
