Homemade Gift Ideas for a Cheerleading Coach

Cheerleaders can create a variety of homemade gifts for their coaches.

According to the International Cheer Union, the first cheerleaders were present during a collegiate football game between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869. It wasn't until 1898, however, that the first cheerleading squad as we know them today was established at the University of Minnesota. The coach plays a crucial role in any cheerleading team, and therefore it's important to acknowledge her with personalized gifts at the end of each season.

  1. Signed Megaphone

    • Purchase a large plastic megaphone at your favorite party store. Choose your coach's favorite color or one that represents your team's color. At a practice, ask everyone on the cheer team to sign the megaphone using a paint pen. Ask them to write a special message to the coach thanking her for her service with the team. Keep this hidden from the coach until everyone has signed it, and then present it to her.

    Cheer Basket

    • Create a cheering gift basket by reusing an old fruit basket or purchase one and fill the bottom with recycled tissue paper or crepe paper in you team's colors. Select items to put in the gift basket to tie in your cheerleading theme. You might choose a stuffed animal that represents your team's mascot or cheer memorabilia such as small plastic megaphones or pom poms. Place a framed photograph of your cheer team in the basket with the year written on the back. Use clear cellophane to enclose the basket of goodies and tie a colorful ribbon to finish off the gift.

    Photo and Framed Mat

    • Take a photograph of the coach with the cheerleading squad. Enlarge this to at least to a size of 11 x 14. Purchase a standard-size mat with a thick border. Place the photo in the mat and ask members of the team to sign it. Be sure to write the date and any other special accolades the team received that year, such as state champions, somewhere on the mat.

    Cheering Scrapbook

    • Create a year-in-review of your cheer team's accomplishments. Purchase a blank scrapbook and fill it with photographs and memorabilia from throughout the year. Include newspaper articles highlighting your team and its accomplishments. Write a special note or poem to your coach to include in the gift. Use cheer-themed paper, stickers or embellishments to carry the cheerleading theme throughout the gift.
