Marble Painting Projects
Marble painting is a unique painting technique which uses gravity to create one-of-a-kind designs. This form of painting can be accomplished with simple poster paints, marbles, paper and a shallow pan. After coating the marble in paint, the child lines the cardboard box with a piece of paper and rolls the marble around. The results are a distinctive picture requiring little preparation or clean-up. Variations on basic marble painting provide children with many project ideas.

Using Different Paint and Paper Varieties
-
The colors and paints used in marble painting are not limited to primary colors. Children can use fluorescent colors to paint their piece or can use a combination of primary and fluorescent or pastel hues. The paper used for the paintings can also be experimented with. For example, while plain white paper is the most common choice, colored construction paper provides a unique and colorful spin on the project.
Marble Painting with Magnets
-
In basic marble painting, the marble is moved around based on the movements of the box. A project using magnetic marbles and wands provides an educational alternative to the basic project design. With this project, paint-covered magnetic rather than glass or plastic marbles are placed in the box and are moved across the paper surface with a magnet wand held to the underside of the box. In this project, children have more control over the design being created since they are in control rather than gravity. In addition, during the project students can be instructed on how magnets work.

Holiday Projects Using Marble Painting
-
Marble paintings created using the basic or magnetic techniques can be used to create simple art pieces. However, these paintings may also be included as part of a larger project or modified for a special occasion. For example, marble painting can be used to make holiday projects such as Easter egg pictures or posters. Using a piece of paper with a template of an egg printed on it and pastel-colored paint, the child will complete the painting in the usual manner. After the painting is dried and removed from the box, the egg shape will then be cut away from the remaining paper and added to a larger poster or hung on its own.
Making Cards with Marble Painting
-
Making greeting cards for special occasions is a simple way for children to use the marble painting technique. Regular white or colored construction paper is laid in the bottom of the box and the painting is completed in the usual manner. Once the painting has dried, it can then be removed from the box and folded in half. The child may want to decorate the card further with stickers or drawings; others may opt for adding a personal greeting.
