Tea Party
-
A popular choice for a theme for an afternoon party, the tea party has its own selection of cliché foods that guests will expect and enjoy. The staple treat of the tea party is the very British offering of scones, complete with jam and cream to go on top, which are usually served on plates complete with paper dollies or else cake stands. Sandwiches are another solid option. Suggested fillings include cucumber and mint, as well as smoked salmon and cheese and cheese and ham. You can serve up treats such as carrot cake, while drinks come in the form of teas, iced and hot, as well as soft drinks such as lemonade and fruit punch.
Barbecue
-
If you're hosting your afternoon party in the summer, a suitable way of taking advantage of the sunny weather is to heat up the grill and serve barbecue food. A large variety of foods can be offered with a barbecue, and you don't have to simply serve up beef burgers and sausages, though these are enjoyable too. Try grilling some vegetables instead, such as tomatoes, peppers and mushrooms, on a kebab stick. Chicken and fish are also suitable for the grill.

Children's Party
-
Your afternoon party might be a children's birthday celebration, or else you might just have a large amount of toddlers and young kids to cater for, who are pickier about what they eat. Finger foods work well in these situations, and they don't have to be limited to traditional offerings such as cocktail sausages and sausage rolls. Healthier options include cucumber and carrot sticks, as well as little cherry tomatoes. Drinks can include juice and soda.
Healthy
-
Keeping your afternoon party food healthy shouldn't be too difficult. Offer nibbles in bowls to guests throughout the afternoon. For these, avoid pretzels and tortilla chips and go instead for bean sprouts and snow peas, or else nuts; try roasted almond nuts rather than less healthy options such as salted peanuts. Salads don't have to be boring either, and are appealing on a summer's day in the sun. Try serving a tuna or Mexican bean salad.
