Both Solaris and Linux are operating systems. This means that they are software that runs on a computer and manages other software. Both operating systems are independent take offs of the 1969 operating system, "Unix." Both have advantages and disadvantages to choosing one of them. For example; Solaris is more like the original Unix program, but Linux has been designed to run faster.

If you broke down the two systems and evaluated them in several different ways, there can be a logical argument for either one of the systems being the better one. Solaris was created in 1983, where Linux is from 1991, and a research paper should go back to their creation. Linux is operated over several companies, meaning that the cost of research and development is split amongst all of them. There are over 1,000 researchers working on Linux. Solaris has been designed by Oracle and focuses more specifically. It understands the system CPU, memory, I/O, and network resources so that it can handle several important workloads.

The research paper would break down the growth of computers because Linux was formed right at the beginning of the computer evolution and it could show Linux's role in the evolution itself. It can discuss how Linux has grown from being used solely on servers, to being used on desktops, and now can be used on any computing format, according to its website, "From wristwatches to supercomputers."

Although the Solaris research paper would be very similar to the Linux research paper, there would be some noticeable differences. There were eight years from 1983 until 1991 where Solaris was not competing with Linux, and during that time period it developed a foothold on the industry. This would also give a different aspect because the mid-80s is still before computers really took off, and expanded. Now Solaris can operate on over a 1,000 systems and holds hundreds of world records running on the ideal systems, Oracle's Sun x86-based X-series servers and SPARC-based T-series and M-series servers.
