Salary of Inside Telecommunication Sales

Many organizations have three types of sales employees: inside, outside and retail sales representatives. While retail and outside sales representatives sell products and services to customers in person, inside sales representatives solicit customers by contacting them over the phone and the Internet. In May 2010, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimated the salary for inside sales representatives in the telecommunications industry.

  1. Telecommunications

    • The entire telecommunications industry had the highest concentration of inside sales representatives among all industries, employing 72,140 in 2010. This includes wired, wireless and satellite telecommunications providers. The average salary was $59,140 per year for these occupations. The average salary includes bonuses, commissions and other incentives to reward employees for successful sales.

    Wired Carriers

    • Wired carriers include telecommunication organizations that offer telephone landline, digital line or cable television services to homes and businesses. This also includes satellite television providers. Most of these organizations offer all three of these services. This industry employed approximately 45,820 inside sales representatives in 2010. The average salary was $58,130 per year.

    Wireless Carriers

    • Wireless carriers offer telephone and Internet services. These carriers use networks and transmission towers to provide services to individuals and businesses. Among the 16,500 wireless inside sales representatives employed in the United States in 2010, the average salary was $62,530 per year.

    All Other

    • The BLS groups telecommunications resellers and other telecommunications providers, such as radio dispatch networks, under the broad industry of "other telecommunications carriers". These types of telecommunications providers employed 9,320 inside sales professionals in 2010. The average salary was $57,330 per year in this industry.

    Job Outlook

    • Sales occupations, including inside and outside sales, telemarketers, retail salespersons and supervisors, made up for 17 percent of jobs in the telecommunications industry in 2008. Many telecommunications inside sales representatives also provide customer service to individuals and businesses over the telephone. Between 2008 and 2018, the BLS expects these occupations to decline approximately 10 percent. Most job openings will result from those retiring and high turnover rates in this industry.
