Approximately 2.6 million American children play Little League baseball or softball.

Little League International is the world's largest organized youth baseball program, with four distinct divisions of play: baseball, boys' softball, girls' softball and the challenger program for children and teens with physical or mental disabilities. The organization is primarily driven by volunteers at every level (e.g. directors, coaches, umpires); however, umpire consultants are paid staff members who are appointed by a district administrator to oversee umpire training, act as a source of information and coordinate tournaments.

  1. Main Duties

    • The role of umpire consultant is mainly informational and educational. Under the supervision of the district administrator, consultants develop and oversee the training of thousands of volunteer umpires, provide advice and instruction, answer technical questions and may serve as umpires for higher level tournaments. An expert technical knowledge of the rules and regulations of the game, strong interpersonal skills and teaching ability are essential criteria for this role. Although the position is compensated, an eligible candidate for the role of umpire consultant will be expected to already have many years of service at the volunteer level.

    Average and Median Salaries

    • Umpire consultants typically begin their careers as volunteer umpires or league presidents.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a mean annual salary of $28,900, while the Occupational Information Network (O*Net) reports a median annual salary of $22,880. Depending on the state of employment, the lowest paid 10 percent of umpire consultants may earn less than $15,450 annually, and the highest paid 10 percent may earn more than $48,310 per year.

    Salary Variation by State

    • Michigan is the top paying state for umpire consultants, with a mean annual salary of $59,470. Pennsylvania and Vermont are also among the highest paying states, with mean annual salaries of $43,510 and $42,100, respectively. However, states with the highest payment rate are not necessarily the states with the highest employment levels. California, Wisconsin, Kansas, Colorado and Missouri have the highest employment rates for umpire consultants, but all report mean annual salaries of less than $30,000. Georgia and South Carolina are among the lowest paying states, with mean annual salaries of $15,100 and $16,700, respectively.

    Employment Outlook

    • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that careers for umpires and related occupations are expected to grow at a rate of 23 percent through 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. However, this high growth rate must be balanced by the fact that, at present, there are only 110 Little League International employees worldwide. The organization is predominantly run by volunteers, at a rate of about 40,000 volunteers for every one paid staff member; furthermore, the organization has expressed an intent to maintain this rate of employment.
