Include the kids in your class with fun art projects.

You are never too young to learn about art. By teaching the kids in your class about art and art appreciation, you are unlocking their creativity and potential. In addition to transcending age, art breaks down the barriers of class, gender and ability. It is inclusive and, above all, fun. Get kids enthused with imaginative junior primary art activities.

  1. Collage

    • By making a giant collage to hang on the classroom wall, you can include all the kids in the class. This will teach them the importance of teamwork. Decide on a theme that complements your current school topic. Cut and paste pictures from magazines on to a large piece of craft paper. You can also include photocopied pictures from textbooks that have been colored in by the class.

    Portraits

    • You can develop kids' attention to detail by encouraging them to draw portraits. Start by drawing an oval on a piece of paper in black ink, then photocopy it. Divide the class up into pairs. Distribute the templates and ask the children to fill them with the features of their partner. Hang the pictures on the wall and get the kids to guess who's who.

    Butterflies

    • Teach children about nature and symmetry with a butterfly art project. Ask the children to fold a piece of paper and encourage them to paint one wing of their chosen insect with poster paints on one half of the paper, with the crease as the edge. With the paint still wet, fold over the paper and press. Unfold to reveal a beautiful butterfly.
