Crane Game Tricks

Try out these tips on your next arcade trip.

Crane games where players try to obtain a prize are classic arcade staples. They can also be some of the most challenging games in arcades, presenting a mix of luck and skill. If you have experienced the frustration of watching your prize slip out of the crane's grasp, try these strategies to even the odds.

  1. Watch Carefully

    • Crane games with large, easy to grab prizes usually seem like they have good odds, but looks can be deceptive. It's best to take your time and first observe the behavior of different machines carefully by watching other players. You might notice that the claw in that tempting game has very low grip strength, meaning you should focus on a strategy of using the claw to push your prize toward the drop area.

    Play the Odds

    • Game enthusiasts on a UK science show recently observed that crane games appear to operate on a programmed set of probabilities. Many, though probably not all, crane games seem to vary the amount of grip strength the crane's claw exerts between different play rounds. Learn the patterns by watching others play the machine. In time, you can get a better sense of when you are most likely to win by counting the number of losses in between wins.
