Christmas Gift Bags To Make

Boxes aren't the only Christmas gift holders to use.

Gift bags are functional, versatile and offer endless opportunities to be creative. You also don't have to worry about them being the perfect size for the gift, as you do with boxes. If something peeks over the top of the bag, you can simply use tissue paper to cover it.

  1. Gifts

    • Start by deciding what gift you're giving. You can elect to place one large item in an appropriate size bag (such as a Santa doll), or many smaller gifts, like Christmas stickers, toys, and clothing. If you choose the latter option, you may want to wrap each gift in loose tissue paper. This gives the recipient the feeling of opening presents over and over.

    The Bag

    • Although there are many Christmas-themed gift bags available for purchase in stores, it's not that much more difficult to make your own. You can choose a red or green bag (the traditional Christmas colors) and similar color tissue paper for a simple gift bag. You can also get creative and purchase a plain white or brown paper bag to use as a blank canvas. Put Christmas-themed stickers, stamps, or drawings on the bag. If you're feeling ambitious, you can also hand-paint them.

    Tissue Paper

    • An often-overlooked area of the gift bag, tissue paper is important in the overall theme and color scheme. Be sure to choose hues that match the rest of the bag. They don't have to be red or green, but should pick up on colors on the bag itself. Lift the tissue paper so that it not only conceals the gift inside, but peaks out over the bag as well.

    Finishing Touches

    • No Christmas gift bag is complete without finishing touches such as ribbons, bows, and other extras. Once again, the color should be consistent with the overall scheme of the bag. Christmas is an appropriate time to use shiny or metallic colors, such as gold and silver. Common colors also come in metallic sheens and you may want to explore this option as well. Gift tags can be cut in the shapes of Santas, evergreen trees, ornaments or snowflakes. If you don't want to use a gift tag, considering sticking a Christmas card in the top part of the tissue paper, where the recipient will be sure to see it.
