Clamps are holding devices. Terminology can vary, but clamps can include vices, cramps, holdfasts and grips. As some of these clamps are available in different sizes, it is often advisable to have a selection of the same tool.

A manufactured workbench can have a metal or wooden vice fitted onto it. This may use bench stops or 'dogs' for gripping purposes. In restricted spaces, a portable bench, such as a workmate offers the perfect solution, as it is capable of holding large awkward-shaped objects and can be folded away for storing after use.

    G-Clamps and C-Clamps

G-clamps can be used to hold small pieces of wood, or with other G-clamps, to secure larger pieces. Several of these can be used to bend wood around a former or jig when gluing.

Sash clamps are used to hold together furniture carcasses and other large items when gluing. They are usually used in pairs, although gluing a cabinet together may require eight. They are available in different lengths, with longer clamps having T section bars for greater rigidity.

Quick release clamps go by a variety of names, but have one thing in common, they can be operated with one hand, enabling work to be held while clamping. They can be sash-clamp size down to G-clamp size.

    Miter Clamps

    • Miter clamps are used to clamp miter joints when gluing. They hold the wood at a 90 degree angle to ensure accuracy. Internally and externally fitting models are available.
