Needlepoint is a craft done by sewing different color threads onto fabric with the use of a needle. Dating back thousands of years, needlework was found in Egyptian tombs. Today, most needlepoint is done for purely decorative reasons while some other types are strictly functional. Prior to the release of computer programs that specialize in making needlepoint graphs, designs had to be hand-drawn on paper.

PCStitch: Premier Cross Stitch Software

PCStitch has been around for many years and offers two versions of the program (as of March 2011): PCStitch Standard and PCStitch Pro Version 9. With the Standard version, users can design images directly in the graphs or upload any image, including photographs, and turn it into a graph with a few clicks of the mouse. The Pro version is for those who are looking for a bit more capability, including personalized stitched fonts, notes within the graph for reference purposes, enhanced export features allowing you to use your graphs and images in other applications and making custom stitches to drop into your designs where you like. Both versions have a free download to preview allowing you to try before you buy to ensure you make the right purchase for your needs.

EasyGrapher

With four customized programs depending upon the type of needlework you do, EasyGrapher may be for you. The original EasyGrapher allows you to design cross-stitch patterns from scratch or by converting scanned pictures. For those who work with plastic canvas, Bargello or Hardanger styles of embroidery, the EasyGrapher Specialty is the version for you. EasyGrapher Professional combines the abilities of the original EasyGrapher and EasyGrapher Specialty for more customization of your needlework. For those interested in drawing stitch diagrams, the EasyGrapher Stitch Wiz provides that functionality.

Stitch Color 2.0

For those less-active cross-stitchers, Stitch Color 2.0 is a basic program that allows users to download their free program and make a cross-stitch graph out of any picture, photograph or image. As a basic program, it does not have the extended capabilities, but is good beginner's program.
