Where Do I Find a Film Editor?
Fertile sources for editors include college film faculties, film festivals, film school editing courses and filmmaking forums. Socializing with filmmakers will help you network and find suitable collaborators for your film. Editors working in independent (indie, non-Hollywood) or small-scale projects often edit films alongside their main job as media teachers at colleges and institutes. Other editors may be contracted to television networks.

Film Festivals
-
Joining the U.S. film festival circuit allows you to rub elbows with film buffs, fellow filmmakers and editors, amateur or professional. FilmFestivals.com and FilmFestivalsPro.com provide comprehensive information on film festivals around the globe. The most well-known indie film festival in the U.S. is Sundance, held in Park City Utah in January. There are also a number of smaller, lesser known festivals which are themed, or for sub-categories, such as film shorts or documentaries.
Motion Picture Editors Guild
-
Eliminate rank amateurs by consulting the Motion Picture Editors Guild: a union providing membership to credentialed editors. It has two offices: one in New York, and one in Los Angeles -- phone and email contacts are provided. You can subscribe to the guild's magazine, and also ACE-Film Editors.org's "Cinema Editor" magazine for the lowdown on editor issues and coming to grips with professional editing software.

Internet Forums, Directories and Networks
-
Online directories, such as the Independent Editors U.S. Directory, list available editors, their location, credits and email address. You should be prepared to relate essentials: production stage of your film, e.g. pre- or post-production; budget; running time; scale of release -- festivals, cinemas; and editor pay. Editors often have websites where you can contact them. They often have a profile on social networking sites where users upload their resumes, advertise projects, join groups and respond to job offers on the network.
