Halloween Art Activities

Children who are too young to help with carving a pumpkin can still decorate one using paint, markers or foam shapes.

Impress the trick-or-treaters this year with creative Halloween art projects suitable for kids of all ages. Challenge children to let their imaginations run wild and see who can create the scariest witch or cat for a Halloween display. Halloween art doesn't have to be expensive -- kids can create spooky decorations with just a few simple household items, markers and paint.

  1. Black Cats

    • Make a decorative but inexpensive black cat by stuffing a black trash bag with newspaper to create the cat's head. Flatten the corners of the bag to form ears, and paint on the face and whiskers.

Create a simple mobile by cutting out a large black-cat shape from card stock. After painting and decorating the cat, hang pumpkins, ghosts and candy-corn shapes from the cat with string.

    Witches and Warlocks

    • Color a pumpkin green and paint on facial features, then add a cape, hat and hair before displaying the witch on the porch.

Involve even the youngest children in Halloween artwork activities. Provide an outline of a witch or warlock and let the children fill in the details with a selection of wiggly eyes, cotton, wool, pompoms, buttons, markers and stickers.

    Ghosts and Goblins

    • Make paper-plate ghosts by attaching lengths of white crepe streamer to the bottom of a paper plate and sticking white paper arms to the sides. Finish the project by drawing the mouth and eyes on the plate.

Children will enjoy decorating cupcakes to create Halloween artwork they can eat. Make simple goblins using candy eyeballs, green and black icing.
