Metal tension rods allow players to adjust the resonance and overall tone of their drumhead.

On average, a drum consists of more than a dozen parts. Each part plays a role in the drum's sound, resonance and durability, but perhaps none are more important than the shell. Using a strong, wood veneer shell is imperative for a drum to physically withstand the constant vibrations that come with everyday play.

  1. Tamo Ash

    • Tamo ash is a popular veneer for drums given it is a heartwood that is sturdy, resonant and consistent. Many major drum manufacturers use tamo ash veneer as a centerpiece for snare and bass drums and toms. The heartwood is a tight, straight grain.

    Plywood

    • Economically minded drum builders and manufacturers use alternating grains and layers of plywood when constructing drums. While lacking the resonance of more exotic forms of wood veneers, plywood veneers are durable and cost significantly less than exotic wood surfaces.
