Types of Crochet Pot Holder Designs
When first learning to crochet, a pot holder may well be the first thing you make. Despite the simple project, many varieties of designs allow the beginner and the more advanced crochet craftsperson to find a project to suit their style and ability.

Single Crochet
-
The most effective pot holder uses one of the simplest stitches: the single crochet. Crochet an entire square using single crochets, and you'll have created a tightly crocheted pot holder. When you've made the square the desired size, cut and fasten off your yarn, weaving the small tail into the body of the pot holder to disguise it. For a more finished look, choose a complementary color yarn and single crochet all around the edges.
Advanced Stitches
-
An attractive pattern that's also dense enough for a pot holder is the solid shell stitch. It's made by making five double crochets in one stitch with skipped stitches on either side that pull the stitch to form its shell shape. Another stitch that works well for this craft is the petite popcorn stitch. To make it, yarn over and draw up a loop five times in the same stitch, then yarn over once more and draw the yarn through all five loops on the hook. It features single crochets on either side of it to make the bulky stitch pop out. Both stitches can be made into a pot holder by chaining 21, turning the work, then simply combining single crochets with either the shell or popcorn stitch.

Considerations
-
Use a natural fiber, such as cotton; acrylic may melt and burn you. It's suggested to use worsted weight yarn for this project and a size H, I or J crochet hook.
