Gin Rummy Secrets

Played by two persons, Gin Rummy requires players to form melds of three or more cards consisting of matched pairs of straight flushes by drawing from a stock pile and discarding. Once the cards that are not part of melds in a player's hand totals less than 10, they can knock and "go low" to try to catch their foe with high cards. Knowing some Gin Rummy tricks and secrets will help you fare well against your opponents.

  1. Watch the Discards

    • You can gauge what your opponent is trying to accomplish by watching what he discards. If he tosses low cards, he is probably trying to make melds with face cards, so you can catch him with high-value cards if you can go low quickly.

    Heed the Hand Shuffle

    • Less-experienced players often shuffle the cards in their hand when they make a meld to place their cards together to make the hand easier to read. However, this also tips an opponent that he shouldn't knock because the shuffler probably has a low total in her hand.

    Discard with Strategy

    • If you see your opponent pick up a five of clubs from the discarded pile, be wary of discarding another five or a low club because either is likely to improve his hand. Instead, try to hold onto these cards until you have a better-formed hand, and discard them near the end of the round.
