A cake that uses dowels for support. When decorating cakes, whether small, medium or large, sometimes wooden dowels come in handy. Many times when making a layered cake, wooden dowels are inserted through the cake to stabilize the layers so they do not topple over. To support a layered cake similar to those professionals make, stack your cake layers together. Using a mallet or small hammer, gently hammer the dowels through the layers.
Kite-Making
-
Kites are fun at any age. Making a homemade kite can be fun and quite the learning experience. Use thinner, smaller dowels, because they are lighter, to create the dowel frame. A simple kite to make uses two dowel rods that crisscross to from an X, then paper or fabric is glued to the frame. For a more complex kite, use more dowel rods that are lashed together with lightweight string to form the frame.

Hanging Mobiles

Mobiles are easily made using dowel rods. Mobiles are hanging decorations that have a balanced construction. To make a mobile, cut different lengths of wooden dowel rods and suspend the wooden dowels from each other using lightweight string. To ensure the mobile hangs correctly, make sure each dowel rod bears the same amount of weight.
