Make crafts from General Foods International coffee cans.

Recycle those General Foods International coffee cans by using them for craft projects with children or students in your classroom. A number of different craft projects can involve the use of a recycled coffee can. Encourage students to have their parents save empty coffee cans and bring them in to class for future projects. Send home notes to parents listing items that the classroom can use for craft projects.

  1. Kitchen Utensil Holder

    • Create a useful kitchen utensil holder from a General Foods International coffee can. Cover the can with a piece of construction paper, gluing the ends in place. Use craft sticks and glue a layer all the way around the can, trimming the sticks if they are too long. Select a wallpaper sample or wrapping paper sample and cut three strips that will fit around the container. Glue each strip around the can, one on the top, one in the middle and one along the bottom of the can. Place wooden or plastic utensils in the can and place the can on top of a kitchen counter.

    Bunny Rabbit Pencil Holder

    • Use a clean, empty coffee can to create a bunny rabbit pencil holder. Gather the following materials: coffee can, construction paper, two googly eyes, three different sized pom-poms, small bow, glue, scissors and a black marker. Wrap colored paper around the can and cut it according to size, gluing one end to the other overlapping the paper. Cut out two ears from the same color paper and glue them to the paper that you wrapped around the can. Use two medium sized and one small pom-pom for the nose, arranging the small one in the middle and two medium sized ones underneath that one, then glue them to the can. Use a black marker to draw whiskers on the bunny's face. Glue on the two googly eyes and glue the bow near the bottom of the bunny's face.

    Plant Holder

    • Use a clean, empty coffee can as a plant holder. Use construction paper and wrap it around the can, securing it in place with glue and trimming off the extra paper. Decorate the paper using markers, pom-poms, foam craft pieces or paint. You can also paint the can itself without covering it with construction paper first. Start with an inch or two clipping with at least one leaf from a hearty plant such as ivy or spider plant. Fill the coffee can three quarters full of soil and plant the clipping in the soil. Water and keep moist at all times.

    Wish Bank

    • Create this bank from a General Foods International coffee can that children can use to save for something they are wishing for. Have the child think of something he wants and wishes to save money for. Cover the coffee can with construction paper and let the child decorate the can with images of what he wishes for. Use stickers and magazine cut-outs or draw the items on the can. Cut a slot in the lid of the can big enough to place dollar bills through when folded up. Place the top on the can and show him how the can will work by donating the first dollar into the slot.
