Ladder Braid Crafts

Once mastered, the technique of ladder braiding can be used to create hundreds of different color combinations and patterns. Ladder braiding can be used with almost any braiding medium -- twine, hemp, cotton strips or plastic laces. Ladder braids can be used to make lanyards, rugs, key chains and necklaces.

  1. About Ladder Braiding

    • Ladder braids are most commonly made using six strands braided together, but a braid can also be made with four or eight strands. It is one of the most common types of decorative braiding and can be used in many of the same applications where a square knot would be used.

    Uses

    • The braid is used as an accent on the edge of rugs, but is also commonly used for youth craft projects such as making lanyards and key chains from plastic lacing. The center strand of a ladder braid is fixed, allowing the braid itself to function as a drawstring. This can be attached to bags and other projects to create a decorative closure.

    Technique

    • Mastering the technique of ladder braiding can be tricky, but is possible for both elementary school children and adults. Secure six strands to a hard surface using tape or safety pins. Pick up the strand beside your right hand and weave it over the next, under the following strand, and over the next. Using the strand by your left hand, weave it under the first strand, over the second and under the third. Follow this pattern until the braid is the length you desire, then tie in a knot and trim the excess.
