What You Need to Airbrush a Helmet
Whether its militaria, motorcycles or baseball, there are never-ending design and style options for airbrushing helmets. The essential supplies however will not be that different. Make sure to always paint in a well ventilated space and with the proper protective equipment such as goggles and face-masks regardless of what helmet you're focusing on.

Basic Materials
-
You need a good airbrush and the paint. You will also need an air compressor. For the paint, decide on the finish as well as how many coats you desire. You can find paints that have gloss, flat or semi-gloss finishes. Determine how shiny you want it. Remember that water-based paints are generally safer to use. You'll need primer paint in some cases and perhaps a finishing coat, such as lacquer to ensure that the finish is protected and sealed.
Military
-
If you are refinishing an antique military helmet there is a likelihood that some of the former paint remains on the piece. In this event, use mild sandpaper to remove the remaining pigment. Remove this completely and make sure the helmet surface is smooth and even before applying the new paint. You want the finish to be uniform across the helmet's exterior.

Motorcycle or Other
-
Motorcycle or bike helmets are often adorned with patterns or designs that amplify their appeal or color schemes. This requires some form of stencil or other adhesive material to block the portions of the helmet you don't want exposed to certain stages of the painting process. This allows for the varied or layered look that you desire.
