Toad houses are a fun and relatively easy craft to make, depending on how elaborate you get. Consider when making a toad house whether the toad house will serve a functioning purpose in your garden or just be a fun craft for kids to make for their pet toads.

Kids Craft

Toad houses are an easy craft for even the smallest children to make. Using a piece of construction paper, have the child decorate it any way that he or she chooses. Then, tape the decorated paper around an empty oatmeal container. Help the child locate a moist and shady spot out in the backyard and dig a small hole in the ground there. Lay the decorated oatmeal container on its side in the hole. Then just sit back and wait for the toads to arrive.

Gardening Craft

Toads can beneficial to your garden. They eat garden pests and insects, including ants, cutworms, June bugs, Japanese beetles and grubs. To make a toad house for your garden, you need an old clay pot. Cut away a small arch shaped opening along the top edge of the pot. Wetting the pot will make it easier to cut. Use acrylic paints to decorate the pot any way you choose. You can also cover the pot with grout and press rocks from your garden into the grout. Place the pot upside down in a moist shady spot.
