Crafts can be a fun way to keep middle school age kids connected to their church.

Keeping middle school age kids connected to their church community can become challenging as this age group begins to spend more time with friends and participates more in extracurricular activities. Christian churches and communities can continue to engage this age group with service-oriented participation within the community, Bible study and fun and meaningful activities and crafts.

  1. Create a Bible Cover

    • Gather some fabric remnants (old jeans work well for this) and decorative supplies like beads, ribbons and buttons. The kids can choose from among the offered materials to design a personalized cover for their Bible. Use a hot glue gun and/or needle and thread for applying the decorations to the chosen fabric.

    Stained Glass Cross

    • Contact a local company that creates stained glass and see if it can donate some glass to your church group. You might even be able to have an expert donate his time to give your group a lesson in stained glass. Cutting the glass can be a tricky procedure, so this project is best if the kids can be guided by a professional.

    Bible Verse Tote Bag

    • You'll need blank tote bags for each child, some fabric paint and brushes, and a list of verses or inspirational quotes. Students can trace some verse ideas on the bag in pencil to see what they like, then paint over it with fabric paint. They can then embellish with beads, buttons and rhinestones.

The Faith of a Mustard Seed Necklace

    • Obtain a package of mustard seeds. Because they are tiny, the seeds will need to be fixed to a shell, bead or stone, then strung on the cord or ribbon to create a necklace. There must also be a hole for attaching the necklace cord. Once made, the necklace will remind the wearer of Matthew 17:21 and having the faith of a "mustard seed."
