Leather Sporran Crafts
A sporran made of leather is a pouch worn at the front of a kilt as part of the traditional dress of Scottish Highlanders. In Scottish Gaelic, the word sporran means purse. For Scottish men, the sporran performs the same function as pockets, as kilts do not have pockets. In America, a sporran would more closely resemble a fanny pack than a purse.

Style
-
Traditional sporrans are made of black leather that may be smooth or textured. Another common style is made from fur pelts of rabbits and muskrats. Common adornments on the front of the sporran are three tassels and a clan crest. Tassels are made from leather or horse hair, and the clan crest may be a medallion or stamped into the leather. More modern versions of the sporran are larger, plain and have a snap closure. Modern versions are designed to be attached to a leather kilt belt instead of on a chain, as with more traditional styles.
Crafting
-
Crafting sporrans made of leather is quite simple, especially if you purchase a kit with pre-cut and punched leather pieces. Leather pieces come pre-embossed with Celtic symbols, or you can stamp them into the leather yourself with special leather stamping tools. Some people choose to craft a matching braided leather strap for their sporran. Today's kilt wearer may also enjoy a matching knife sheath, cell phone case, flask cover, gun holster or wallet. All of these pieces can be purchased as kits, or you can create your own custom-cut project.
