The Best Violin for a Student
"Do I have to practice?" can be a phrase from the past when the right violin is chosen for a student. Just as some shoes fit better than others, a violin also needs to fit a student properly for the student to enjoy playing. Size is just one thing to consider when choosing the best violin for a student.

Size
-
A properly sized violin depends on the arm length of the student. With a violin positioned under the student's chin, she should be able to curl her fingers all the way around the scroll easily with a comfortable amount of bend in the elbow.
Set Up
-
A violin must also be properly set up to achieve ease of play and proper sound quality. The set up of a violin involves the pegs, bridge, strings and soundpost. Pegs made of rosewood or ebony are preferred because they won't wear as quickly and are easier to tune.

Strings
-
Strings are a very important aspect of a violin because they determine the sound of the instrument. Nylon or gut core strings are preferred for the tone they produce. Steel core strings can produce an undesirable metallic sound.
Bow
-
It is OK to start with a less expensive bow as long as the stick is straight and the hair is even when tension is applied. These starter bows are usually made of brazilwood. For a better quality bow pernambuco wood is a step up.
