Easter Tree Crafts

Easter tree -- or Easter topiary -- is a festive touch to any table. The Easter tree is thought to be of German or Ukrainian decent. The original trees were simply branches placed in vases, and decorated with hollow eggs. Now, families decorate larger, more elaborate trees with varying decorations.

Cutting a wooden stick to size, ensuring it's thick enough when upright to support the six-inch Styrofoam ball that you slide onto one end. Hot glue the stick in place to ensure the ball doesn't fall off. Insert the other end of the stick into a clay pot filled with floral foam, securing the stick with hot glue. You can attach the foil covered chocolates (or foil-covered hard candies) using hot glue, or double-sided tape. Start covering the tree at the bottom of the ball, and work your way around. To decorate the base of the topiary, artificial grass or moss can be inserted into the floral foam. Consider mixing long blades of grass with artificial flowers, for a spring-like effect. Have extra candies on-hand -- they seem to disappear after the project's completion.

Reuse a table-top Christmas tree and create an Easter tree. Easter trees are generally smaller than traditional Christmas trees, although you can use any tree you have on hand if needed. Decorate the tree with hollowed out eggs (you can decorate the eggs with dye, glitter or markers.) You can hollow out eggs using a pin, poking a hole in the top of the egg, as well as the bottom of the egg, blowing to remove the yolk. Be sure to wash the eggs out prior to dying them. Pastel ribbon or small bunny sugar cookies can also decorate the tree. Sugar cookies can be decorated using royal icing, candies or sprinkles. Be sure to let your guests know which ornaments are edible, and which are only decoration prior to eating.
