Snooker Cue Tip Advice

Snooker is a game of skill, angles and patience. To be successful you need a first-class technique, nerves of steel and excellent concentration. It is also beneficial to have the right equipment, and know how to look after and maintain it, if you are going to be playing on a regular basis.

  1. Getting the Right Cue

    • If you're playing snooker semi-seriously, you will want a cue with a stick-on tip. Most cues will come with one of these, though cheaper models will sometimes use screw-on or push-on tips. If you plan to play competitively it's worth the extra money to buy a good quality cue with the right tip.

    Bedding in a Tip

    • When you get a new cue, or replace the tip of the old one, it's important to bed the tip in for an hour or two. Do this by sticking to gentle shots and not hitting the ball too hard. This will extend the life of the tip, preventing it from getting damaged too quickly.

    Changing the Tip

    • Every so often, when the tip becomes worn, the time will come to change it. To do this, you must first remove the old tip by sliding a knife between the top of the cue and the bottom of the tip. Then smooth down the top of the cue and bottom of the tip using sandpaper. Dab a small amount of superglue gel on the tip and press it against the cue for a few seconds. Allow the tip to settle by leaving the cue overnight.
