With children under the age of six, it's important to use nontoxic paint. Using hand prints and foot prints, they can be used creatively to create many different shapes and designs, such as angels, wreaths, turkeys, bees, trees and anything else you and your child can imagine together.

More creative approaches can be used with older children, such as putting a bit of paint on the paper and having the child use a straw to blow air through it and move the paint around on the page. A stained glass effect can be achieved by using a piece of picture frame glass and drawing an abstract design on it with a marker and painting it.

Older children would enjoy having a chance to use their creative side to paint in different artistic styles ranging from painting soup cans in the pop art style to painting a still life using a bowl of fruit, painting portraits or painting a picture of the backyard in an Impressionist style.
