What to Look for in an Alto Sax
The saxophone is widely used in popular and jazz music. The alto sax is popular among classical performers and composers and played a leading role in the evolution of jazz. An alto sax is the most common instrument used by beginning saxophonists.

Quality of Model
-
Alto saxes are available as student, intermediate, or professional models. They are all played in the same manner but have variations in quality and features. Most instruments have a brand, model and serial number just below the thumb hook on the back of the instrument. An Internet search will reveal how well it compares.
New or Used
-
A used instrument is a viable option for a higher-quality model than you could otherwise not afford. If you buy a used alto sax, check for dents and the condition of the pads. Minor dents should not affect sound quality unless the dent is in the neck of the instrument. Pads should fill the key cup, but if the instrument is good apart from the pads, these can be replaced.

Lacquer or Plating Finish
-
Most modern saxophones have a clear or colored lacquer finish. Vintage saxophones were often silver-plated and produce a slightly brighter tone. They tend to have darker patches where the plating is tarnished. If they look very shiny they have probably been nickel plated and the tone may be compromised. Gold-plated saxophones are the most valuable, as they have a warm, heavy sound.
