Be confident, be bold.

With some imagination, children can transform recyclable materials into pictures, jewelry and household items. Spending time with arts and crafts helps kids explore their creative selves and develop motor skills. At the end of the day, kids can be proud of their artistic expression.

  1. Hanging Mobiles

    • Kids can transform pieces of cardboard into a hanging mobile of the solar system. Cut shapes include stars, a crescent moon and a sun decorated with acrylic paint. A hole punched near the top of each piece allows kids to insert a short string or thread. Finished pieces can dangle freely from a dowel or door knob.

    Jewels of Nature

    • A small stone or sea shell becomes a brooch from nature. Children can opt to decorate with a marker pen or acrylic paint. A dab of cement glue bonds the stone or shell to a brooch's metal attachment.

    Mosaics

    • Kids can create a mosaic on the back of a paper plate or on the sides of a shoebox. They can cut small squares or triangles from a colorful magazine or tear pieces for a free-form look. With a small brush, they apply white glue, diluted if desired, to the plate. A top coat of glue finishes the mosaic.

    Napkin Rings

    • Kids can make napkin rings by cutting sheets of different-colored craft foam into straight or wavy strips. Kids add their designs with permanent markers or foam stickers. A hole punched near each end of the strip allows kids to thread a plastic lanyard or ribbon to form the strip into a napkin ring.
