Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil.

Soy wax candles are made from hydrogenated soybean oil. Many consumers view soy wax as a natural and renewable alternative to petroleum-based paraffin candle wax. Some soy wax candles may contain additives, however, including paraffin. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Container

    • The wax produced from soybean oil has a low melting point, according to the Soya website. Such wax doesn't have a solid texture, so a candle consisting of 100 percent soy wax must be contained in a jar or other heat-safe container.

    Pillar

    • In order to be molded into a free-standing pillar shape, soy wax must be mixed with other ingredients, such as stearic acid or paraffin, to increase its firmness. Candle manufacturers may market such a product as a "blended wax" candle.

    Scented

    • Essential oils such as vanilla or lavender are frequently added to soy wax so that the candle will emit a pleasant fragrance as it burns. Dyes are often incorporated into the wax for decorative purposes.
