Salad dressing is a sauce used to infuse full-bodied and robust flavor into food such as greens, vegetables or wings. Although some form of salad dressing has been around for approximately 2,000 years, it wasn't sold commercially until 1919.

Mayonnaise Salad Dressing

A mayonnaise-type of salad dressing looks like mayonnaise that you spread on your sandwich, but is cooked. In addition, it is creamier and consists of base ingredients such as vegetable oil, egg yolk, lemon juice and vinegar. The most popular mayonnaise-type of salad dressing is ranch dressing.

Vinaigrette Salad Dressing

This type of salad dressing is made with oil and vinegar. There are other ingredients such as mustard, fruit juice or hazelnut added to the oil and vinegar mix that add a range of mild to strong flavors. Some of the vinaigrette salad dressing includes red wine vinaigrette or Italian.

Reduced Calorie Salad Dressings

Reduced calorie salad dressings come in all flavors, but have at least one-third fewer calories than regular dressings per serving size. Such dressings let you have the full-bodied flavor without guilt.
