What Type of Transmission Fluid Does a 99 Pontiac Sunfire Take?

by Justin Cupler

In 1999, Pontiac replaced the Sunbird with the Sunfire, which came in three body styles: sedan, coupe and convertible. In 1999, the Sunfire had two engine options: the standard 2.2-liter with 115 horsepower, and the optional 2.4-liter with 150 horsepower. Also available were three transmission options: a five-speed manual, three-speed automatic or a four-speed automatic. All three transmissions use their respective fluids for lubrication and cleaning purposes, so using the correct fluid is key to keeping them in good operating condition.

Transmission Fluid Requirements

When fitted with an automatic transmission -- three-speed or four-speed -- the 1999 Pontiac Sunfire requires Dexron-III automatic transmission fluid. The 1999 Sunfire with a five-speed manual transmission requires synchromesh transmission fluid that carries the GM part No. 12345349, or an equivalent fluid. Both of the required transmission fluids are available at most part stores.
