How to Enter a Marathon
Think you've got what it takes to run a marathon? Enter your name via the Internet or by regular mail, and we'll see you at the race!

Go to the Web site of the marathon you plan to run.

Click on the registration button and enter all information required (including a credit card number).

After filling out all the requested information, click on the button indicating you are ready to apply.

Print the completed application once you have received confirmation on the screen showing the organization has received it.

Check back on the site for your name in the list of registered runners.
Via the Mail

Obtain a registration form from your local sporting goods store, YMCA, sports club or running club, or call, write or e-mail the race organizers for a form.

Fill out the form according to the instructions.

Mail your application with the fee in the form of a check or other accepted payment.

Check back with the organizers if you do not receive confirmation of your application.

Tips & Warnings
Visit the Runner's World Web site for a calendar of marathons and organizer information, as well as links to Web sites for many of the marathons.
Visit the Road Running Information Center Web site for a list of running clubs and race information.
Be sure you are physically ready to run the marathon before you enter.
There are usually space limitations in marathons, so sign up early.
Make note of the restrictions, if any, before you apply.

Many marathons require that you pick up your race packet, including your race number, in person. Make sure you schedule a time to go pick up your packet the day before the marathon. Be sure to have a photo ID with you. -

Take advantage of early-bird entry periods if offered. Some marathons and other races provide substantial discounts or incentives for entering early. Also find out what other discounts may be available (local runners, etc.)
