Protect Against Sunburn

Almost all health officials agree that there is no such thing as a healthy tan, but a sunburn is particularly damaging to your skin and may result in pain, swelling, blistering and long-term skin damage.

From Quick Guide: Above-Ground Pools
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Avoid exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when sunlight is most direct and intense.

  2. Step 2

Use a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. The SPF (sun protection factor) should be at least 15. If you will be going in the water, choose a waterproof brand.

  3. Step 3

Apply sunscreen liberally to all exposed parts of the body, including the lips, ears, nose, neck, hands, feet, eyelids and scalp, at least 15 minutes before going outside.

  4. Step 4

Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours - more frequently if you'll be hopping in and out of the water.

  5. Step 5

Put on a hat with at least a 3-inch brim all around.

  6. Step 6

Wear sunglasses that block 100 percent of UVA and UBA rays.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you spend time in the sun, you should check your skin regularly for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions. Call your doctor if you find changes in birthmarks or moles, or if you have a sore that does not heal.
  • Sunscreen should not be used on babies younger than six months. Cover babies with hats, clothing, umbrellas or other shade.
  • Some people are sensitive to PABA, an ingredient often used in sunscreens. PABA-free varieties are available.

on 5/22/2009 I think it already depends on your skin type.To cure current sunburn, fresh aloe is a very good thing. Or even better: horse balm or red tiger balm.

on 7/31/2006 The absolute best thing is fresh aloe. We got some from a friend down in Southern California, and planted 1 leaf of the plant in a planter pot. The plant is now huge, and it takes no water, and we have free aloe! Fresh, with all its potential whenever we want it. Slice off the thorns and peel the skin back. The relief is amazing (albeit sticky).

on 7/11/2006 Use olive oil. Wash it off after a few minutes and add a thick layer of Vaseline before going to bed.
