This simple technique is a good place to get started with sea kayaking.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a mildly sloped beach with little to no waves coming up to the shore.

  2. Step 2

Place your kayak on the edge of the water and climb in the cockpit.

  3. Step 3

Fasten the spray skirt and make certain the pull strap is on the outside of the cockpit.

  4. Step 4

Wait for a small wave to bring the water line up and push out with your paddle against the sand. This should enable you to become water bound and paddle out to open water.

  5. Step 5

Use your hands to help you scoot down the sand if the water isn't coming up enough to let the boat slide in easily.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watching the pattern of small waves rolling up to the shore will help you to find a spot where the water will ease the kayak into the sea with the least effort.
  • Sea kayaking can be a very fun and relaxing sport. However, as with any sport dealing with open water, it has many inherent dangers. When learning how to sea kayak, it is a good idea to seek out professional instruction.
