Some people are more buoyant than others. If you're having trouble submerging when you're scuba diving, try adjusting your weight belt.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Scuba Gear

Choose a Belt

Step1
Know that all weight belts are designed with a quick, one-hand release buckle. In case of an emergency, the belt can be dropped easily.
Step2
Realize that lead is the weight of choice. The belt itself is often a two-inch wide strip of tough nylon.
Step3
Decide which type of lead to choose ' some are simple bricks, others are shaped and have a plastic coating.
Step4
Understand that the weight is often divided into 5 and 10-pound increments and each is made to thread onto the belt.
Step5
Know that another type of weight belt uses a series of pouches and removable bags of lead shot ' this is often the most comfortable style.
Step6
Determine the proper weight for your belt (see "How to Choose the Right Weight for Your Scuba Belt.").

Okay, Now Use It

Step1
Put on the weight belt just before your BC and tank.
Step2
Lay the belt on the ground, inside facing up and buckle on your left side.
Step3
Step over the belt so it now lies behind your heels.
Step4
Bend forward, pick up the belt by the buckle and loose end, then place it on the small of your back.
Step5
Stay bent over while buckling the belt in place.
Step6
Stand and put on the rest of your gear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never dive with too much weight.
