Step 1
Know that all weight belts are designed with a quick, one-hand release buckle. In case of an emergency, the belt can be dropped easily.

Realize that lead is the weight of choice. The belt itself is often a two-inch wide strip of tough nylon.

Decide which type of lead to choose ' some are simple bricks, others are shaped and have a plastic coating.

Understand that the weight is often divided into 5 and 10-pound increments and each is made to thread onto the belt.

Know that another type of weight belt uses a series of pouches and removable bags of lead shot ' this is often the most comfortable style.

Step 6
Determine the proper weight for your belt (see "How to Choose the Right Weight for Your Scuba Belt.").

Step 1
Put on the weight belt just before your BC and tank.

Step 2
Lay the belt on the ground, inside facing up and buckle on your left side.

Step 3
Step over the belt so it now lies behind your heels.

Step 4
Bend forward, pick up the belt by the buckle and loose end, then place it on the small of your back.

Step 5
Stay bent over while buckling the belt in place.

Stand and put on the rest of your gear.
