CD technology is new enough that experts disagree about how to clean CDs without causing damage or degrading sound quality. Nearly everyone agrees CDs need to be cleaned.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dishwashing Detergent
  1. Step 1

Distill or filter tap water, or use bottled water.

  2. Step 2

Put a drop of dishwashing detergent and lots of the purified water (around a quart) in a large bowl.

  3. Step 3

    Thoroughly mix the solution.

  4. Step 4

Read "How to Clean CDs" for instructions on using the solution.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to remove all the solution from the CD by drying with a soft, lint-free cloth. Dry by wiping from the center of the CD outward, NOT in a circular motion.
  • This solution will work on audio CDs, CD-ROM discs and DVDs.
  • Commercial CD cleaning fluids might be safer to use.
  • Any commercial or homemade product that successfully cleans CDs might leave a residue that will cause sonic degradation or long-term erosion.
  • Alcohol, abrasive cleaners, petroleum-based products, ammonia, commercial plastic cleaners and Armor All will damage CDs.

on 9/2/2007 My grandson uses a white crayon to cover the scratches on his DVD's. I don't know if this would work on a CD, but I've seen it work on his DVDs. Just lightly color the scratched places on your DVD with the white crayon and it plays like a brand new DVD.

on 2/2/2006 Put lotion on the CD, rub until CD is covered, then wipe clean with a soft towel from center to outside edge, not in circles.

on 6/11/2007 Hair spray works on all CDs. It gets out the deep, deep scratches. The best CD repair companies use it. Why spend $200 on a CD repair kit when you can use the same stuff at home?
