For the kid who has graduated from Legos, an erector set makes good sense. The first set was patented in 1901. Since then, kits ranging from cars to carousels have been released.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver Sets
  • Wrenches
  • Erector Sets
  1. Step 1

Consider an erector set for the curious child. Those who enjoy building things will spend hours creating different configurations with one of these kits.

  2. Step 2

Expect to pay between $20 and $275 for most sets, depending on how fancy the kit is. Meccano is the most popular brand.

  3. Step 3

Keep in mind that the more expensive kits will contain motors and gears and are appropriate for older kids who understand how to operate those items.

  4. Step 4

Look for erector sets at hobby stores, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart and online auctions.

  5. Step 5

Ask the seller in an auction if the set contains all of the pieces, since finding you can't finish your project because of missing parts is no fun.

  6. Step 6

Allow up to three weeks for delivery.
