Sincerity and a personal touch are the keys to a good thank-you note.

From Quick Guide: Giving Thanks with a Note
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Write your note within a week after your visit - no excuses.

  2. Step 2

Use your own engraved stationery, a thank-you card or something informal, instead of your regular professional letterhead, for that all-important personal touch.

  3. Step 3

Write your note by hand. Remember, unless the visit really was a networking situation, the intimacy of a house visit can only be communicated via a handwritten note.

  4. Step 4

Reminisce. Sure, it was only a week ago, but spell out what was truly special: picking peas in the garden, that squally boat trip, charades....

  5. Step 5

Thank your hosts for any extra effort on their part. Did they make your special vegan diet, oust their twins from the bedroom, quarantine the dog?

  6. Step 6

Consider extending a reciprocating offer to your hosts, such as inviting them to your home for a weekend.

Tips & Warnings
  • A handwritten note is the only acceptable way to truly thank someone.
  • Keep in mind that while a telephone call is easy, a note is something they can keep, especially if you include a few "Wasn't that fun?" photos.
  • Think about sending flowers or a potted plant if you didn't arrive armed with a gift for your hosts.

on 12/9/2005 I'll often purchase a postcard after I've been dropped off at the airport and write a little thank you note while I'm waiting for my flight. It ensures that I don't forget to send a note, and it is a fun way to acknowledge their hospitality.
