Step 1
Make 28, 1 1/2-inch yo-yos in various colors and patterns. Use rich, fall colors or any scrap material you have on hand. Use more or fewer depending on the size of the turkey fan you wish to make. (These are for the turkey's tail.)
-
Step 2
Cut a 6-inch diameter circle from brown, washable felt or fabric. Trace around a 3-lb. butter tub for your circle. (This is for the turkey's body.)
-
Step 3
Cut a turkey head from a piece of brown, washable felt or fabric. Trace around the mouth of a pint salad dressing jar twice to make a 5 1/2-inch figure eight.
-
Step 4
Cut a triangle from orange, washable felt or fabric. The triangle should be about 1 inch tall and, at the widest point, 1 inch wide. (This is the turkey's beak.)
-
Step 5
Cut a wattle from a piece of red, washable felt or fabric. Freehand a large figure eight about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. This can vary in size.
-
Step 6
Cut three leaves using your favorite fall leaf shapes.
-
Step 7
Lay all pieces, except the yo-yos, on paper-backed fusible webbing and iron.
-
Step 8
Cut out fabric pieces with paper webbing on back. They are now ready to peel, stick and iron to your sweatshirt.
-
Step 1
Measure from the neck band to the bottom band of the sweatshirt.
-
Step 2
Find the middle.
-
Step 3
Place the top of the large circle (the turkey's body) on the middle mark, and iron on to the sweatshirt.
-
Step 4
Place the head on the body with one circle above the body and the other circle overlapping the body. Iron in place.
-
Step 5
Glue wiggly eyes with fabric glue, or paint eyes on the turkey.
-
Step 6
Iron beak on just below the eyes.
-
Step 7
Iron wattle to one side of beak and touching the corner of beak.
-
Step 1
Attach four yo-yos going up to the neck of the shirt from the top of the turkey head.
-
Step 2
Sew three yo-yos (a total of six) at a slight angle on each side of the head going toward the shoulder seams.
-
Step 3
Place four yo-yos (a total of eight) angling upward from the turkey shoulders.
-
Step 4
Sew three yo-yos (a total of six) on each side of the turkey.
-
Step 5
Attach two yo-yos (a total of four) angling down slightly along each side.
-
Step 6
Stitch yo-yos in place with the "hole" sides down. Hold the yo-yo in place; take the needle through the inside of the sweatshirt into the top of the lip of the yo-yo hole, then back through the shirt. Do this three or four times and tie off.
-
Step 7
Repeat for the bottom of the lip. This will leave the top of the yo-yo puffy and free - like feathers, but secure enough to wash.
-
Step 8
Iron leaves around the bottom of the turkey to hide the fact that he doesn't have feet. Or you can make feet for your turkey.
-
Step 9
Use fabric paint to trim around the seams and make wings for your turkey. Or whipstitch embroidery thread around to hide the seam edges.
