Step 1
Bring three or four pairs of jeans, preferably well-worn and a little bit on the long side.
-
Step 2
Stay cozy. A turtleneck or other warm shirt and a good, warm jacket are essential. A vest is good when it's not quite cold enough for the jacket.
-
Step 3
Pack a good pair of boots, broken-in, plus a belt and a hat.
-
Step 4
Bring leather gloves to protect your hands.
-
Step 5
Take along sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm to protect yourself from the sun during long days outside.
-
Step 6
Toss in a raincoat to protect yourself when it's not so sunny.
-
Step 7
Pack pantyhose if you're a woman not used to riding. It will help prevent your thighs from chafing.
-
Step 8
Don't forget a sports bra if you're a woman; you'll appreciate having it on long trail rides.
-
Step 9
Ask whether guests typically dress up for dinner or other occasions at the ranch you'll be visiting. Standards vary considerably from ranch to ranch.
-
Step 10
Bring a good book. Make that a great book. Or two.
