Caffe Americano contains two ingredients: espresso and water. The origins of the Americano are uncertain, but one story attributes its name to American soldiers overseas during World War II who would mix espresso and water to mimic traditional American drip coffee.

Ingredients

Espresso

Water

Tip

  • Substitute 2 ounces of very strong drip or French press coffee for a single espresso shot.

Directions

Hot Americano

  1. Pour an espresso shot into a coffee mug.
  2. Add 6 ounces of hot water to the cup. The water should be just shy of boiling for the best results, which you can accomplish by heating water until small bubbles just start to form, or by using a teakettle.

Iced Americano

  1. Put an espresso shot in a tall glass.
  2. Add 6 ounces of cold water.
  3. Fill the glass with ice and stir gently to chill.

While an Americano should taste bold, you can add an espresso shot to standing water -- hot or iced -- to maintain the crema and give the coffee a smoother flavor. For other variations, try adding syrup flavors such as white mocha, hazelnut or vanilla. A small amount of cream or milk can mellow out the strength of an Americano.
