Nordic poles are not accessories for your hands. They help provide power and thrust as you cross-country ski.

1
Expect to pay anywhere from $55 to $185 for a good pair of poles.
-
2
Choose poles of the appropriate size.
-
-
3
Extend your arm from your side, and hold it parallel to the ground. A properly-sized pole reaches to your armpit.
-
4
Decide if you want rigid or more flexible poles. Poles for racing tend to be stiffer than poles used for touring.
-
5
Check to see that the grips and baskets are firmly attached. Baskets and grips are removeable so you can choose accessories for your style of skiing. Large baskets are helpful if you plan on skiing in the backcountry often. Smaller baskets are useful for racing and skiing at nordic centers.

Grip the poles to see if they feel comfortable in your hands.
If you find a pair of poles that you like but the baskets and grips don't suit your needs, go ahead and buy the poles. You can find cheap replacement grips and baskets.

Sometimes poles which are too long can cause bicipital tendonitis. Consider buying adjustable poles to obtain just the right length. Poles can be used for hiking as well.
