Step 1
Begin your journey into personal color by divorcing yourself from your favorite colors and whatever colors currently reside in your closet.

Look at your hair in the mirror. Is it dark brown, medium brown, ash brown?

Remove all traces of makeup.

Look at your eyes in the mirror. Establish the shade of your eyes: clear blue or green, pale green, bright blue or grayish blue-green eyes.

Check your skin's undertones. Do you see golden, pink or bluish hues?

Choose soft earth tones if have light brown hair with any shade of green eyes, and golden undertones to your skin. Look for browns, yellow-based greens, oranges, salmons and light camels. By wearing a green top, you'll really make your eyes jump out. Grays, navys, taupes and pinks will make you look lifeless. Wear black for pants or skirts only.

Choose winter white, soft blue reds, gray blues, taupes, soft rose browns, sky blues and blue greens if you have dark or medium brown hair, bright blue, bright green or grayish blue or green eyes, and pink undertones to your skin. Black may overpower your coloring, so choose it as a bottom color only.

Choose bright colors if you have ash brown hair with gray blue eyes, and bluish undertones to your complexion. Look for vivid primary colors including blue reds, royal blues, emerald greens and lemon yellows. Icy pastels will complement your coloring while bringing out your eyes.

Go shopping. You're armed with personally empowering information, so get out there and use it!

Try on colors that you've determined to be well suited to your coloring. Step out of the dressing room into light that is as close to daylight as possible, and ask a friend or sales associate for their opinion.

Look at yourself against a white or off-white background for an undistorted view of the color.

on 11/22/2005 If you are extremely pale, white and pastels may make you look "washed out." Dark reds, blues and greens can be beautiful, and even black can be striking.
