Enhance your beauty by dressing in clothes that best complement your coloring. Colors well suited to your unique features will facilitate your daily wardrobe coordination and help you put your best foot forward.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Begin your journey into personal color by divorcing yourself from your favorite colors, as well as those that currently reside in your closet.

  2. Step 2

Consider your skin's undertones by looking at a makeup-free face in a mirror. Your hair and eye color suggest you have black skin, brown skin or olive skin with yellow undertones.

  3. Step 3

Complement black skin with blue undertones by choosing bold, vivid primary colors. Consider black, true white, blue reds, royal blues, fuchsia, lemon yellow, hot pink and blue greens. Select icy or cool-toned pastels.

  4. Step 4

Complement black or brown skin with yellow or golden undertones, as well as olive skin with yellow undertones, by choosing bold primary colors. Black, true gray and navy will make great base colors for your wardrobe. Icy and cool pastels will bring out your features.

  5. Step 5

Avoid shades of soft yellow, rose, mauves and soft pastels; they'll make you appear sallow and drain the color from your face.

  6. Step 6

Go shopping. You're armed with personally empowering information, so get out there and use it!

  7. Step 7

Try on colors that you've determined to be well suited to your coloring. Step out of the dressing room into light that is as close to daylight as possible. Ask a friend or sales associate for a second opinion.

  8. Step 8

Look at yourself against a white or off-white background for an undistorted view of the color.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment. There are a million colors out there; if you're unsure which one is right for you, try it on and get a few opinions.
  • Color blind? Find someone you trust, give her your list of colors and have her help you select the most complementary shades for you.
  • If you find a color you like that is outside your range, consider it for pants or a skirt. Keep it far away from your face.

on 8/8/2006 Definitely bring someone from the opposite sex with you.
If you're a guy, bring a girl .
If you're a girl, bring a guy.
After all, who knows what looks good on you better than someone of the opposite sex.

Usually this is only a good idea when your dressing casual and not professional, as girls lack experience in formal men's clothes and visa versa.

Make sure to pick out something that you not only like, but something that she likes. Unless you just need a complete makeover, then it might be wise to go with her advise.

Pick out a lot of various clothes and matches. Remember, that some shirts only go good with certain blends of denim. Make note of whether white shoes or black shoes are most appropriate for a particular outfit. White shoes look good with most pants, and lighter colored shirts (baby blue, red with some white stripes). You want to have your shirt compliment the shoes. Black shoes look good with most all red shirts, dark blues, black shirts, and green shirts. It always depends because of the various blends that are available for each color. Use your best judgment (or your friend's).

Try on as much as possible!
As a general reminder: take into consideration shrinking! What fits like a charm in the dressing room, may be skin tight after two wash cycles.
