Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Begin your journey into personal color by disregarding your favorite colors and the colors currently in your closet.

  2. Step 2

Look at your hair in the mirror. Determine if your hair shade is closer to gray or silver.

  3. Step 3

    Remove all traces of makeup.

  4. Step 4

Look at your eyes in the mirror. Are they dark brown or golden brown?

  5. Step 5

Check your skin's undertones. Do you see golden, pink or bluish hues?

  6. Step 6

Choose soft earth tones if you have light gray hair with golden brown eyes and golden undertones to your skin. Look for golden browns, clear yellow-based greens, orange reds, salmons, camels and shades of gold. Ivory is your best shade of white. Wear black as a pant or skirt only - the color may overpower your complexion when worn next to your face.

  7. Step 7

Opt for bright colors if you have silver hair, dark brown eyes and olive or beige skin. Look for vivid primary colors including blue-reds, royal blues, emerald greens and lemon yellows. Black and all grays suit your coloring very well.

  8. Step 8

Hit the stores. You're armed with powerful information, so get out there and use it!

  9. Step 9

Try on colors that you've determined to be well suited to your coloring. Step out of the dressing room into light that is as close to daylight as possible, and ask for an honest opinion from a friend or sales associate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment. There are a million colors out there. If you're unsure if one is right for you, try it on and get a few opinions.
  • Colorblind? Find someone you trust, give them your list of colors and have them help you select the shades that suit you.
  • If you find a color you like that is outside of your range, consider it for a pant or skirt. Keep it far away from your face.
