Step 1
Begin your journey into personal color by divorcing yourself from your favorite colors and whatever colors currently reside in your closet.
-
Step 2
Consider your natural hair color. Determine if it's golden, flaxen or ash blond.
-
Step 3
Remove all traces of makeup.
-
Step 4
Look at your eyes in the mirror. Are they light blue or green, clear blue or green, or a shade of gray?
-
Step 5
Check your skin's undertones. Do you see golden, peachy, beige or bluish hues?
-
Step 6
Choose soft earth tones if you are a golden blonde with green or dark blue-green eyes, and golden undertones to your skin. Look for browns, yellow-based greens, oranges, peach and light camel. Grays, navys and pinks will make you look lifeless. Wear blacks for pants or skirts only.
-
Step 7
Choose plums, mauves, pinks, rose-based browns and beiges, blue grays and blue greens if you have ash blond hair, blue, green or gray eyes, and pink or bluish undertones to your skin. Orange and golden colors will make you appear very pale.
-
Step 8
Choose ivory, apricot, tans, beige, milk chocolate browns, violet blues and lemon yellows if you have flaxen hair, clear blue or green eyes, and peach, pink or golden undertones to your skin. Marine blue and warm grays will work for you, but black and burgundy will render you sallow.
-
Step 9
Go shopping. You're armed with personally empowering information, so get out there and use it!
-
Step 10
Try on colors that you've determined to be well suited to your coloring. Step out of the dressing room into light that is as close to daylight as possible, and ask a friend or sales associate for an opinion.
-
Step 11
Look at yourself against a white or off-white background for an undistorted view of the color.

on 8/1/2006 I have dark blonde hair, hazel eyes and skin that is pale (but tans easily), and the color that suits me best is khaki. It makes my hair look more blonde and vibrant. Hope this helps!

on 7/10/2006 I know we all like black, but a better base color for blondes is brown. Sometimes the black is just too dark (things like sunglasses) and they can look terrible. Depending what you like, you can have chocolate browns, tans, light browns, whatever you like.

on 3/8/2006 Solid white near the face will make any skin look radiant, but make sure it is not off-white as this will wash you out.

on 11/22/2005 Don't be fooled! Choosing colors is not easy! The basic rules can be useful, but also misleading. Eg, paler colorings should avoid red as it is too harsh- however, a pale complexion can pull off (even be flattered by) a clear red (like a muted tomato red) in the right context. To work out one's colors takes time and effort using trial and error- check against your face which colors bring out natural warmth, eye color, make you look washed out, etc. It's different for everyone.

on 11/22/2005 Logic can tell you this - if you have light skin, dark colors will make you look even more pale., while light colors will make you appear darker. You can kill two birds with one stone by finding a double shirt (One shirt with the appearance of a shirt with an overshirt) that's a color that matches your eye/hair color well (or a slimming color!) with the undershirt being white. You'll still get the slimming effect or whatever you choose, as well as looking darker, as the white undershirt is what hits your skin, causing contrast.
