Small-boat sailors usually take their boats to and from the water. You'll need to know how to get the craft back on the trailer when the fun's over.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pull the boat up to a dock or beach near the boat ramp.

  2. Step 2

    Remove the centerboard and rudder.

  3. Step 3

Release sheets and remove sails. You may prefer to leave the sails up if the wind is either very light, or blowing from the bow.

  4. Step 4

Back the trailer down the ramp until water covers the rear wheels. Don't get the vehicle's wheels into the water.

  5. Step 5

Move the boat up to the trailer and center it.

  6. Step 6

Release the ratchet lock and pull the retrieval line out from the winch. Smaller boats may load by hand.

  7. Step 7

Attach the retrieval line to the bow of the boat.

  8. Step 8

    Reset the winch lock.

  9. Step 9

Crank the boat onto the trailer. Watch how it rides up onto the trailer. You may need to push it back to line it up again.

  10. Step 10

Drive up the ramp to a spot where you'll be out of the way.

  11. Step 11

Remove any remaining gear and rigging.

  12. Step 12

Tie down straps and other fasteners.

  13. Step 13

Pull the drain plug to let out any collected water.
